Guide and Tips about how to be healthy in the UK
How to be healthy while you are studying in the UK ?
No, I am not going to preach here. Do what ever you like, enjoy and stay healthy. National Health Service (NHS) provides health care in the UK...... Without going into much detail about NHS, I will say registering with NHS is one thing you must do as soon as you arrive. This is free for students and very important, as health care is very very expensive (like all other things) in the UK.
Doctors' AppointmentOnce you are registered with NHS, if you are not well , got to call early morning (after 8:30 AM) to book an appointment. You will be given the option of meeting a nurse ! or a doctor. Personally I go for the doctor for obvious reasons. It's free to meet your doctor, but you have to pay when you buy your medicine. This is per prescription.
If you have a medical condition or an allergy sufferer it's nearly impossible to go to a specialist doctor. All you would get is to meet your GP (General Practitioner) . There is a severe shortage of specialists in the UK !. If you must see a specialist, this has to be approved by your GP, take it from me this is nearly impossible. So the advice is get a full checkup done before you leave your country as the chances are high that even in a developing country you have a better medical system. Specially if you need an operation of anything like that, there is a long waiting list (about 3-6 months)
Dental treatment
Dental treatment is very expensive. Even if you DON"T have problem with your teeth, get them checked by your dentist before you leave your country. This can save you a lot of time and money.
Xray
When you arrive in the UK as a student you are required to go for an Xray. This is not a nice experience and not a way to treat someone who has spent a lot of money !. Bring an xray from your country and you can save all the hassle at the air port !.
Prescriptions
If you have a medical condition bringing a prescription from your doctor ( from your country ) can save a lot of trouble. In the UK, you simply can't walk into a pharmacy and buy prescribed medicine !.
